Yes, it does have side pouch and will fit a water bottle, the plastic type like Poland spring.

I couldn't shove a 16.9 oz Arrowhead water bottle in the side pocket unless I put the bottle in upside-down. A 16-oz bottle of Snapple did not fit no matter what I did. I guess it depends on whether the bottle is tall and slim or has a wider shape. I'm disappointed because the side pockets for water bottles were the reason I bought the purse. Maybe cutting the elastic on the pockets would make them more functional.

The strap stays in place on shoulder, However I had to use a safety pin to keep the strap from moving from the length I chose.
