Q: Has anyone flown with it as a personal item - as in along with a full-size carry-on? It's 3" too tall but does it look small enough to pass?

I have flown with this backpack to Africa as my personal item bag along with my full size carry-on luggage. So I don't think you will have a problem with this backpack as your personal item bag.

Q: Will this bag pass through airport security?

I have never had an issue with any pacsafe product when passing through security internationally or domestically. This includes PacSafe portable safe bags (lots of metal) and camera bags packed inside larger PacSafe backpacks.

Q: Is there a place on the pack to stow my trekking poles?

Not exactly. It has mesh pockets on each side and compression straps higher up. You could stash poles upside down with the handles in the pockets and shafts through the compression straps, but the poles would stick up pretty high relative to the pack. It does not have Stow-on-the-Go trekking pole attachment straps like an Osprey Statos 26.
