Great starter shoes but go up one or two sizes!
I was looking for a somewhat decent looking road bike shoe that wouldn't cost me too much off the bat. Rode with standard platform pedals for the better part of 30 years after trying spd pedals for a few months in the 90's and experiencing the "not getting unclipped fast enough at a stop light, falling over, and making a fool of myself to all the motorists waiting at that light" scenario. A few times. After some recent ribbing from guys I ride with, I decided to try some Speedplay pedals and basically promise myself to just do laps on my front lawn for the next 7 years. The shoes themselves seem to be decent enough. I read all the reviews and admittedly have less than 5 miles on them. So far, so good. Someone had mentioned an issue with the bolts pattern not lining up with their cleats. Mine lined up perfectly and there have been no issues so far with the bolt pattern or the screw holes. The screws have been tightened down with a Speedplay torque screwdriver per specs. Here's why I'm leaving this review(it's the same reason I scoured over all the reviews): The sizing! I wear a size 11.5 wide shoe in the real world, and I purchased a size 47 in these things. I think it was two, possibly even three sizes larger than the chart suggested!. I made a calculated guess based on these reviews and figured hey, with Prime, I could start with one size and return if it didn't fit and go from there. The size 47 actually fit perfect. The fit is not super snug, I do have to pull the straps as tight as they will go. I'm using standard cycling socks now and with the colder Ohio months coming I will be switching to some warmer socks and will still have room. As long a s they do not stretch out more than a normal shoe would, It'll be fine.Bottom line: I don't have too much time in them, but if you're looking for a cheap entry level shoe for road cycling with a 3 or 4 bolt pattern, these could be them for you! Research the reviews for sizing and give 'em a try.
