Do the bulbs get hot ?

The top of the bulb is cool, but the base gets extremely hot. You wouldn't be able to touch it, even with light at 50% brightness.

How many shades of white?

Id say there are about 4 different shades of white specifically. There are other shades of yellow and whatnot too but there are 4 of the nice, mellow shades that could pass as an everyday lightbulb.

Can you set a default color ? I want the bulb to be a certain color every time the bulb is turned off and then on.

Yes, this WiFi light blub can remain in its last setting. Choose the color you want on the app, and return to My Device list page, wait for 5 seconds then your settings will be saved automatically, you can then switch off the light through your wall switch directly.
