Glenn Miller is playing his terrific big band hits again in this stunning musical biography. The great Jimmy Stewart and June Allyson star in this vibrant tribute to one of America's legendary bandleaders, charting Miller's rise from obscurity and poverty to fame and wealth in the early 1940's. The wonderful score swings with the original Miller music performed by the Glenn Miller Orchestra and such musical giants as Louis Armstrong, Gene Krupa, Frances Langford and The Modernaires. Rounding out the great cast are such favorites as Henry Morgan (M*A*S*H), Charles Drake and George Tobias. Tastefully directed by Anthony Mann, Glenn Miller's dynamic sound of swing comes alive once more.

Great for Glenn Miller fans.
For folk who love the music of Glenn Miller and his Band this is a "must have". The DVD print quality is quite good and the sound is excellent. I was not sure about James Stewart's portrayal at first but I warmed greatly to him as the film progressed and he virtually became Glenn Miller. Naturally this is a Hollywood portrayal, a bit sugary in places, but has old fashioned charm.Perhaps there could have been a bit more of the gritty side of Miller. The musical content develops and covers most of Millers famous compositions. Dedicated performances by all the actors.Great to see Louis Armstrong and other greats of that era. Would have been five stars if the definition had been sharper but it is adequate.

Uplifting
An excellent film with many uplifting moments especially when Glen Miller found "the sound" - not sure if the truth is how it was depicted but very good. His wife (played by June Allyson) was very tolerant of his quixotic behaviour as was her parents when he whisked her off.The music is glorious and has the tingle factor, the film contains many favourites such as String of Pearls, In the Mood, Moonlight Serenade. One of James Stewart's best.

Great Glen Miller
Even though it is mono, there is a great sound from this film!! If you like the sound of Glen Miller then I'm sure you'll enjoy this. The story was interesting too, seeing how it was for him in the beginning and how he and his band rose to become one of the best jazz sounds of his time! A tragic loss to the music industry but not forgotten and his influence lives on in today's jazz bands.
