Excellent value - perfect for finding nails at all depths on a gravel drive!
I bought this metal detector having had our garage/stable block roof replaced. We have a gravel drive and were concerned that there would be nails and rogue metal lying in wait to kill out tyres. Sure enough, I detected hundreds of nails, screws, staples, random pieces of metal, both new and very old, even through several inches of gravel. I would seriously recommend that you use headphones, as the main way of detection is aural rather than visually on the meter. It is much easier to listen to a change in sound through headphones rather than via the speaker. Be aware that you will listen to a continuous tone that changes when metal is detected - this can be mildly dementing, but this is a feature of metal detectors in general and not an issue purely with this machine. Overall, I was extremely pleased with the detector - it did a fantastic job, finding even tiny pieces of metal such as staples, for an amazing price. Top marks!

Entry level fun 6/10
I bought this entry level detector for my 6 year old Nephew,he absolutely loves this piece of kit and really,Were I six again so would I.However I am not six and this device does have a few problems. It is rather flimsy in construction and thus will not take a lot of heavy handling, being mostly lightweight plastic and a cheapish alloy of Aluminum and the method of joining the two constituent parts when assembling the device by the use of a grub screw is rather cheap and clunky. The sound that it produces when indicating the presence of ferrous metal is also rather quiet and would benefit from the purchase of an appropriate pair of ear phones to block out other noises present in the environment. These faults however do not detract from the fact that it does work perfectly well and will find ferrous and non ferrous metals beneath the soil to a depth of at least 4 inches and perhaps deeper. It is also quite lightweight and easy to setup and simple to use when in the field, my Nephew had little trouble following my instructions and was soon off on his own hunting for treasure. It is priced fairly reasonably and considering all the above I would give this a Three Star rating or 6/10.So not bad for entry level fun where you don’t expect too much. There are better on the market ,it rather depends on what you want it for.

Received unit with production fault but was able to fix
My husband bought this and said one of the cables was jammed inbetween the casing and the red button was jammed and didn't pop back up but he managed to unscrew the unit and put the cable correctly in so it would close as it should and he fiddles with the red button setting to make it unstuck. The unit now works well, we have used it twice. It detects silver, iron, copper/nickel and aluminium very well but is not so good with detecting gold ( have tried with a gold ring and whilst it does get it it appears detecting the other metals is far easier and more audible). The red button calibrates it: you press the red button in an area where there is no metal and then tune the needle to be 0 to calibrate it after you can hover with it over areas where there are metals. It then makes different pitch sounds depending on your discrimination setting best is to use headphones and also watch how the needle moves, sometimes it will just move the needle and not make a big noise when it finds something, it is very lightweight and can be made quite short with the adjustable stick so even a 6 year old can use it. Not found any gold yet but did dig up some other metals from around 10-20cm deep.It works indoors too even though there's metal in the concrete flooring. I would definetly recommend this unit for anyone who wants to try out metal detecting on a budget.

A really great find.
I think I struck gold with this simple but effective detector for novice users. Bought it for a detectorist event and fun day at a local farm. In a very short time I found a range of metal items in the field. Some a fair way down. Nothing valuable but great fun all the same. The main instructions are poorly written. The smaller quick start guide is a little better. But because this item is stripped down to the bare essentials of a detector, mastering what’s going on isn’t too tricky.Initially you press the red button and set the differentiation dial at it’s broadest setting (just on). You Zero the needle with the other dial. Turn up the volume, and away you go. Listen for a change in tone and flicker of the needle and you’ve found something. At this broad setting it will find items with iron content. Gradually increasing the sensitivity should lead you to different metal types. Practicing with known items will enable you to learn how to read the changes in tone and twitch of the needle on the dial. As long as you re-zero the needle by pressing the red button from time to time the chances of finding something when you pass the sensor over it will be good. You’ll need to buy six AA batteries to get started (not included). Add some headphones if you don’t want people around know you struck gold! Always get permission from the land owner before detecting and report the position of all obviously historic finds to your local museum.

Low quality
Easy to assemble, but very poor quality. I bought it for my son, but we sent it back as it didn't detect anything. We followed the instructions, but no result. Very disappointed

Fiddly, unreliable readings
My 10 year old son had been begging for a metal detector for ages so got this as a birthday present. I get, given the price compared to "professional" ones (in the £100s/£1000s) that this might not be amazing, but I thought he'd get some fun out of it. Unfortunately it's been one of those presents that led to frustration and ultimately consignment to the dusty corner behind the wardrobe. Despite repeatedly re-setting it, the needle seemed to continually wander off and give false readings. Wish we hadn't bothered.
