Primates of the World – An Illustrated Guide

Birthday gift
Following an encounter with a gibbon at a large zoo in December, my daughter announced that she wants to become a primatologist (let's see how long that lasts). Since she never did any research into the subject, I bought her this book as an 11th birthday present. (It's not a children's book but that's irrelevant. She's a strong reader and it's a very engaging book). She was fascinated with this beautiful book, and evern read all the introductory material, as well as browsing the illustrated pages. In April, we visited another zoo, and she accurately identified all of the small primates there without consulting the information on display. A very successful gift. Maybe she actually will become a primatologist, who knows?

Sumptuous illustrations
This gets a 5 from me for the illustrations alone - they are outstanding, absolutely the best artwork I have ever seen of primates (possibly of mammals in general).Other aspects of the book are less impressive: the text is minimal and sometimes inaccurate (e.g. page 88's claim that there are no true squirrels in Neotropical rainforests) and not all species are actually covered, but it doesn't matter because Francois Desbordes' artwork negates all other criticisms.

A wonderful book!
This is a wonderfully illustrated identification book of many of the world's primates. The information about each species is concise and very relevant. I am very pleased with my purchase.
