Q: How long does the lid stay open for?

The lid stays open as long as your hovering over it, also has a push senor button to open and close so you can over ride it. it really is the best bin out there! has a blue LED sensor light which goes down before the lid close so you know when it's about to close. Hope this helps!

Q: How long should the batteries last with normal use?

I've had mine a number of weeks and still on the original batteries - I had the previous model to this one too and it only went through batteries once every couple of months - and that's with a family of 4, regularly using the bin! Maybe change the brand / quality of the batteries you are using?
