I KILL GIANTS

Be careful when reading reviews, especially those with one star. I usually like seeing why someone didn't like a movie, because I may associate with their reasoning despite an otherwise overall high movie score.Part of my enjoyment of this movie was dampened by reading such a review that failed to announce a spoiler in the opening of their revue. There's a special place in hell for people who give away the plot twists or expose what isn't meant to be exposed until the viewer has followed along with the course the screenwriter intended.Further, the review that stole some of my enjoyment of this movie also didn't understand WHY the things they didn't like were in the film nor did they TRY to understand. People who face trauma, especially children, aren't CHOOSING to do so.With that warning out of the way, and without giving away the movie's story progression, I'll explain why I liked it in a round-a-bout way.As a 6 or 7 year old of divorced parents, I was with my dad on the morning of my birthday and due to shift to my mom for a birthday party at a venue in the evening. I knew roughly about how long it would take to make the trip (it was over an hour away) and had been looking at the clock, worrying whether we'd leave in time to make the party by the time my mom requested (and when other kids would arrive). I reminded my dad several times when the party was. Finally I told him if we didn't leave "now" we'd be late.We didn't leave then. When we finally did arrive at MY OWN party, late, my mom begins to scold ME for being late. Somehow a 6 or 7 year old has the ability to hop in the car (public transport wasn't an option, even if a parent would want a young child making such a trip on their own) and make own way, never mind the fact I did everything that I actually COULD DO to try and get dad to get a move on.Sadly, dad wasn't dragging his feet because he wanted to spend a little more of the rare time he got with his son. He was just lazy and procrastinating, I realized when I recall this years later. Parents are overrated.I admit this is a fairly mild trauma. However, when your small, everything seems bigger. I can empathize with the main character of this movie. Even without any childhood trauma, I'm sure most of us can remember being the child that adults didn't listen or pay attention to even when we had relevant, critical, or accurate information to convey. This is the kind of movie that will do poorly financially because it's difficult to describe, accurately, what it's about without giving it away or without putting a preconceived notion into the viewers mind that will prevent them from allowing their OWN imagination and perspective fill in the blanks.I took away one star because I would've like to see a few things related to the girl's adventures handled in a different way.One thing I absolutely applaud is the fact that it HAS AN ENDING. So many films, especially character tales like this, simply don't put in an ending. It's as though the writer just got tired, lost, or hit the deadline and wrote "the end" instead of crafting some way of wrapping the film up. This film has an ending. I can't say whether it's a happy ending or a sad one, as one ultra negative review did. THAT will depend entirely on the perspective of the viewer. This aspect of the film is actually really well done.

It's a Chick Flick!
I was expecting a fantasy/action/adventure movie with some Girl Power thrown in. I was disappointed to find that this is a Chick Flick.Given that, however, it was a really good movie. Very well done, and the acting was excellent. I DO recommend it, if you're looking for a Chick Flick for date night. If that's not what you're looking for, then choose something else.

Not Exactly a Kid Movie
Very “interesting” movie. The production was super well-done. Great acting (and from children performing complicated roles no less), with good cinematography and special effects. The credits list over a dozen producers—weird. One of those producers is Christopher Columbus of Harry Potter movie fame. The trailer and banners tout this movie is from the producers of Harry Potter… It made me think that this movie was like that one. It isn’t. So much so that mentioning Harry Potter is very misleading and more than threw me, as in I was expecting one type of movie and it was a very different type. If it hadn’t been for that, I might have liked ‘I Killed a Giant’ but with the curveball I think it is only okay.Speaking of baseball analogies, baseball was a clever, underlying theme throughout the movie. This movie was a no-hitter, pitcher’s duel for more than half the movie, slow to the point of being boring. I kept thinking, “Where the heck is this movie going?” Then in the last third it gets tense and exciting and the bases are loaded, but, in the end, does it strike out?I don’t want to provide examples to support what I think of this movie because it will spoil the suspense and point of the movie. Other reviews give it away I think. But I will say that it isn’t what you expect based on the advertising, and it will take adults to explain to people younger than 14ish what this movie is all about. And parents might want to watch it before they let their children watch it.

It was OK. Lots of potential, unfortunately didn't fully deliver
There was a lot of potential here and at its core the story is solid, but it didn't quite deliver. I think the actors did a very good job with a script that at times suffered from pacing issues and weak direction. However, I felt that many of the kids looked a little old for the roles. I also didn't become fully invested in Barbara the lead character until way late in the movie. There are quite a few themes to be found here like about being the lonely creative outsider, how one true friend can make a difference in surviving your school years, death and loss, growing up and facing your fears. I feel that most of these were given cursory attention. Then there's the visuals. When you have a story that contains elements of magical realism it usually helps if the visuals and story seamlessly blend. It sometimes felt visually cartoony (yes I know its based on a comic), unconvincing and worst of all it dragged at times. Slow is ok, dragging is not. If you look at a movie like say Terry Gilliam's Brazil, no matter how dark some of it was visually it would still leave you with a sense of wonder. I Kill Giants is a story of enduring tragedy and finding hope in living, but little in the sense of awe and wonder. On a side note I had read the Graphic Novel long before this was announced as a movie and I thought that it would make for a terrific adaptation to the big screen. I'm therefore a little disappointed that this turned out to be just ok.

Beautiful film. An introspective and tender, yet strong girl reacts to anguish
If you need movies explained to you, or just want to check out from a stressful life for a bit, then this may not be your movie. If you like to absorb, digest and think about what the movie is showing, than sit down and enjoy.

Went in expecting something different.... BUT
Kind of glad that I went in expecting a completely different movie, I did not watch the trailer for this prior to seeing it. Had me in full tears at the end, as it was very relatable.

Give it a miss
Grueling to get through, a young girl clearly suffering from psychosis but being humored by another and with others ignoring it like it's just how kids are.Was expecting that maybe it would be just that she could see these things but others couldn't, akin to Spiderwick Chronicles or similar, but no, clearly just utterly delusional.Should have checked the review sites before buying as they were not favorable.

No subtitles
No subtitles, hence the two -almost one- stars for that reason. I thought all films from reputable labels had subs these days. Pity because otherwise it was a rather nice little movie which I'd have given three and a half to four stars otherwise.

English soundtrack, Scandinavian subtitles ONLY...
Although the actual Blu-Ray disc soundtrack is in English the subtitles are all Scandinavian so not use full for the English speaker who is hard of hearing or deaf. This is not made clear in the Amazon description.
