Q: Does this gate swing both ways or just one direction?

There is a latch on both sides of the gate. That is what the gate swivels on. It can go either way. I mounted a 1 x 1 board on the wall first and put the parts that are attached to the wall for the gate into this board. For me this made it more sturdy. I love the look although I am using these gates to keep my 2 dogs contained in the kitchen when I am out.

Q: Does this automatically swing closed to latch or do you need to manually latch it closed after walking through?

It does not automatically swing closed. It is actually quite painful to close it back up correctly. First you have to hook the bottom and then press the latch and slide it in to click closed.

Q: Can the wood on the gate be stained?

Sure! I actually considered doing it so it matches my living room. There's no finish on the wood.

Ummm...the latch on our gate is stiff, meaning that sometimes I can't squeeze the locking mechanism hard enough to disengage the lock. Most days it's alright, and it's getting better with use, but initially?? No, I don't think your eldest minion will be able to.
