yes, they will do stop on their own after 50-60 seconds

Q: Does this thing get rusted?

No. We have had ours for a few years now and it is still in like new condition. No rust

The length of the marble base is 9.06 inches, the width is 6.69 inches, and the diagonal length of the marble base is about 11 inches.

Q: we had one before from a mall and the balls were tangled so we couldn't use it does this one have the balls where they don't tangle ?

The one I ordered through Amazon was packaged very carefully with each ball and string wrapped in plastic. The strings were not tangled. The unit has not tangled; the balls are heavy weight and seem to be good quality. I am sorry that you had that experience. I enjoy the cradle so much; it is intriguing.
