Thought provoking
This is a superb, thought-provoking book. Written simply, there are many seemingly short sentences in the book, which contain the seed of profound ideas. India is very similar to Japan in the sense of having a looong and storied tradition of 'handicrafts'- our superlative metal work, our jewellery making, our weaving, our sculptures and our culinary arts. In fact, kasuri is inspired by Indian bandhakala! There is much that we can adopt in terms of our attitudes towards our crafts, so that we don't get hijacked into an 'international', insipid aesthetic divorced from place, time and cultural ancestry. Made me think...

Those who love the mystery of the acute aesthetic sense of Japan
Its a series of essays written between the 1920s till the 1950s, Soetsu Yanagi was a genius in his observation and direction. The book is urgently relevant now as it was a century ago. The focus of his life was on finding beauty in the ordinary hand crafted everyday items used by ordinary japanese folk, handmade by nameless craftsman, and preserving the craftsmanship to preserve beauty all around us. Especially good read for those of us especially in India who have a love for the dying craftsmanship of India, its handlooms, handicrafts and artwork, and are concerned about the ugliness that has become our everyday lives, from the slippers wear, to the chairs we sit on, to our architecture, and the roads we drive on. Yanagi has shown us the way...
