Yes absolutely clean it after each use. I wash it under hot soapy water.

Q: Since it crumbles as you use it, I'm concerned about what's going down my drain. What is this stuff, and is it going to hurt the plumbing?

Only tiny pieces crumble off in the shower when you use them. Considering the size of drain pipes, I don't think the pieces are big enough to clog anything. They don't stick together so they should pass right on through.
