Q: Will this automatically lock if I go outside and my children are inside, and I close the door behind me?

You can keep it "unlocked" by pulling it down or you can keep it "up" which would cause it to lock when you close it. So, if you go outside and you don't want to be locked out, there is an option to keep it from locking, you just have to remember to do so.

Q: Will this work with sliding patio doors and the permanent door is on the inside?

How? I need a better lock for a sliding patio door where the un-movable door is on the inside. I don't understand how this would work, but I would be excited to learn how it could.

Q: If I am using a dog door insert, will I be able to install this on the middle of the track to lock the door a foot open?

Yes, just make sure when you do the install to have the door locked against the pet door.

Q: Will this work with doors that swing out or in?

This Patio Guardian is designed for use on sliding doors. Unfortunately, we do not know if this item will work in any other application.
