I don't understand why if the material is as stated, stainless steel, it has to be oiled? Is it stainless or not?

Looks like stainless steel, no sign of rust so far. I'm guessing that it is oiled to stop wear with use, as very small measurements are involved, wear could affect (in engineering) the reading. This set is generally used in the motor trade, you can buy a set for musicians without oil, but a lot more money. I just wiped all the oil off as I use it to set up guitars.🙂

Is Thicness gauge the brand or a typo

Don’t know, they are good quality. Well packed in oil and in a plastic sleeve. Well worth the spend, I used them to set valve clearances and they were spot on
