Disappointed by the amount of seeds and dross
Disclaimer: this is only the second lot of sechuan pepper I have ever bought. The first was from a supermarket several years ago and the amount of grit (which I didn't know until recently was the inedible black seeds) made the dish inedible so I didn't use the spice again until the other day.I now know to check for and remove any black seeds before using the husks, which are the actual spice, and is very pungent and zesty - I will be using it much more often now I have been educated.I searched Amazon for a good-quality brand with good reviews and paid quite a lot over the odds for this. Admittedly I only have one comparison, so consider this review with that in mind. The aroma and flavour are very good, so presumably the spice is picked, dried, stored and packed well. I am very disappointed with the amount of seeds, twigs, thorns and other debris though. I spent an hour or so cleaning these out and transferring the good stuff to a jar so I can use it next time without having to mess about.I estimate 5-10% waste, though I didn't bother removing the seeds from the husks, I just discarded the entire pod if it was closed or split with seeds inside.Do I have unreasonable expectations for the degree of cleanliness of sechuan pepper? You decide...
