Q: Could thisbe used to remove white staining and heavy water marks on a slate shower tray?

I doubt that they would. They are made for polishing glass and ceramic. You could try them for the black marks but wax I wouldn't think so. Stone is a porous material so thar stains may have gone into the stone and are not on the surface. I would contact a fire place supplier for advice.

Q: Would this sand smooth bathroom tiles prior to painting ?

Hi, I’ve only used it for unglazed edges, on porcelain garden slabs, and it did the job fine. For the surface of a tile, you may be better using I high quality wet / dry, aluminium oxide paper, fine grade about 220-260 grit. Hope this helps
