Q: Is there a Temperature controller recommended for this item?

Q: do i need an addition heat source in a sauna?

The red light gives off heat, I think you would be fine without an additional heat source, my sauna has 4 of the infrared style and gers up to 145 degrees. I replaced one with red light and it still heats up to 145 degrees
