This guy is small. Holds just a few tools. Good for operations just needing a couple of items to work with. In my case I use a box cutter, a Leatherman, Small putty knife, bullet level and an angle square in one of the side pockets which I modified to fit the width of the blade. Also a couple of markers. No room for anything else. Works for my purpose and has held up pretty well. I did cut some of the internal pocket straps to better fit my choice of tools.Hope this helps.

Will an 8" crescent wrench fit in the main compartment, allowing the zipper to close?

I no longer carry a crescent wrench but I doubt it will fit. I carry a wrench that's 5.6" and I stick it in the side pocket (so that it's easy to access) and I attached a wrench leash to it and then to the pouch so that even if it were to accidentally fall out it could only fall about 3 feet. That being said if your trying to keep an 8" wrench in the main compartment I doubt it will fit nicely.

can a shoulder strap be attached?

No. However it can be attached to a work belt.
