The part that cleans the bottle is actually a chamois material that should not scratch. I use glass carboys so I have no real guarantee that it won't

Q: Will this work for 3 gallon carboys?

Absolutely. The fabric part inside will expand/contract to the size needed. As long as it will fit in the opening, you'll be fine. I was able to get it into a standard 1 gallon milk jug - so a 3 gallon carboy shouldn't be an issue.

Q: What's the overall diameter of the brushes? I'm wondering if this will work in a 1/2 barrel Sanke keg.

Dia on these brushes is about 14 inches and with a Sanke keg dia of 16 inches I wouldn't depend on this. You might move it around to get the sides and the top but I can't see getting all the bottom. Ok for carboys where you can see the results.
