Works great on 2013 iMac OS X Mavericks
When I started looking at blu-ray burners for my iMac, I read um-teen reviews of various drives. I narrowed it down to four brands. I went with the Pawtec first - reviews were decent, some people had no trouble with it. I, however, could not burn blu-ray discs on it. It played them fine, and burned regular DVD's fine, but not blu-ray. So I returned it (my first-ever return on Amazon, and while it cost me a few bucks, it was painless!) and went back and read more reviews on the remaining contenders. It came down to LG, Pioneer (the picture-frame one) and Samsung. The Pioneer looked cool, and the picture frame gimmic was appealing, but in the end, cost won out. The LG was most expensive. The Samsung was least expensive. There appeared to be several models out there (an A, B, and C). I tried researching what the letters meant and it looks like it's basically the order of updated drives. So I took a chance on the latest one - the 506-CB - in white.Took it out of the box and plugged it in. The white drive looks good with the iMac, but as noted on a different review, the Amazon photo looks almost silver-ish, and this is definitely white. Anyway, I inserted a blank disc, and Mac OS X 10.9.3 asked what I wanted to do with my blank BD disc, so that was cool (the Pawtec did not do that). I hit ignore and opened Adobe Premiere Elements 12. Burned a movie to blu-ray (HP brand BD-R discs) on the first try. Plopped it in and it played on my TV no problem. Took it out and compared it to the same movie burned onto DVD - video quality was definitely better. Go blu-ray! I put in a commercial BD movie and it played fine (using one of the free players found online). So it burns and plays blu-ray on my iMac as advertised.I put another blank disc in. This time I told OS X to open Finder. Added a 24 GB 30-min movie file for archiving. Drag-and-drop, just like in Windows (7, no idea how Windows 8 works - I left that train a while ago lol). I clicked "burn" and a window popped up for a name. Named it and clicked "go" and it is 35% complete as I write this. Very easy to archive files onto BD.I have not tried burning a quad-layer disc - they are cost prohibitive. But I wanted the feature for when the costs come down, and this drive is supposed to support that. I think another reviewer said his model AB burns quads, so I have no reason to believe this model CB won't.For out of the box playing and burning a regular blu-ray disc on a Mac, I'm happy, and would recommend this drive. Especially at under $100 with Prime 2-day shipping.

Very Acceptable
This is a very decent optical drive. The USB input is about 12" long. In order to get this drive to work you have to load the particular drivers & software onto it ( Disc Burning & Disc Playing). It comes with the basic software loaded onto a disk.. so if you are adding this drive to a computer with no optical drive will have to add software via their website, then they try to up-sell you on each program, but you don't need to. It works with just the basic stuff. It adds a bunch l unneeded software too (annoying) that no one will probably ever use. Don't have the choice to select each item, all or nothing type thing. But once all applicable software is loaded it works great. If you have your own software even better, then you won't need their stuff.A couple of times I had issues after stopping a disc, then trying to start it again, but that's probably more software related. But otherwise i'm very happy with this player. Delivery was fast too.

Perfect on the go and for your main computer.
Nice device; technology really is so improved that external devices are on par with internal.I have a small case, and no space to put an internal BD writer; so I opted for this one, since it is slim, does not require extra power (1 USB connector, but it require at least 500mA, so can't work on hubs unless they are powered by at least 2A AC adaptor), and it is external.IT burns nicely the various disks (tried both BD and DVD DL); it is recognized at boot, so if you are booting a new computer with no OS, you can use this drive to install your OS; which was not possible in the past with external drives. It is fast enough; altho nowadays the optic devices are really way behind in transfer rate, so when installing something from DVD/BD, be patient and observe how your 8 core computer sit and wait for an interrupt from the drive, do do anything. On the negative is that the usb cable is quite short; you may use a different one, but if you have only the one that is included with the drive; keep in mind that is very short (about a foot I believe). Also the drive seems to fall asleep during long install; I had the drive just stop reading during installation in multiple times under windows 7 64; to wake it up I had to basically open the caddy and push it in again. It maybe a defective one that I have received, or is simply the firmware that put the head to sleep after a bit of work...not sure. Also I believe the port is USB2.0; so not super fast, but enough to burn data on a decently quick computer, so it is not that much of a problem. If you have a decently new TV, you can plug the drive to it and you are in fact using it as BD/DVD player (it uses a specific protocol, which I forgot the name ), just keep pressing the eject button for more than 3 seconds, after plug it to the TV, and it will go in player mode. Nice feature if you are traveling and the hotel has a TV that support that system (otherwise just use your laptop).Overall, I feel like it is a great product, the price is similar to an internal counterpart with good parts so it is up to you if you prefer something that any computer can use (useful if you have no BD drive for your TV, and use both Mac, Linux and Windows computer), go for this one.On a side note, I ordered the white model, got the black one. I can live with it, but that's sloppy.

The drive Apple should be selling
Works quite well with both DVDs and Blu-rays. I have tested both on Windows 7 (Bootcamp'ed on my Mac, no less), and DVD on my Mac (Yosemite). I can read BD-ROMs on the Mac, but have not bothered to get a video player for BRD movies for Mac yet. Since this works on Windows and the ROMs work on Mac OS X, I am going to presume movie playback works just fine on the Mac side as well.Key note for use on Apple systems (and Apple makes this somewhat clear on their own support forums): you must plug this device into the MacBook or iMac or whatever system you have DIRECTLY for best (and, sometimes any) functionality. If you plug this into a hub or dock or other "port extender" device, you may find flakey performance or no functionality at all.

Nunca me ha fallado!
Cumple con todas las funciones, es muy fácil de usar y no tiene ninguna complicación. Lo uso muchísimo para quemar discos BluRay, así como DVD's (lo uso en Mac).

Very Good Value and Works Well with Windows 10.
I had been thinking for some time about purchasing this external Blu-Ray hard drive. Having bought a Sony Movie Studio HD DVD creator a few months back (from Amazon) which can transfer projects to Standard Discs as well as Blu-Ray Discs, I was tempted. The package turned up about a week after ordering, and I was eager to try it out. First annoying aspect was the short USB Lead which was too short for my desktop, so I used a small stool on which to place the Hard Drive. The other worry was though whether it would work with Windows 10. After a couple of dummy runs transferring short movies and slideshows to disc, I am happy to report it does work very well with Windows 10. Phew!! That was a big relief. After playing the discs in my Sony Blu-Ray player, I was quite impressed with the results. Some of the graphics looked stunning, showing great detail, and the soundtrack was pretty good too. Of course, I used TDK BD-RE rewritable discs, and I must mention that the transfers from the Movie Creator does take longer than using standard discs, about 20-30 minutes longer on average, depending on the length of the project. So, patience is needed. I used a desktop which I only bought three months ago for discs transfers, although I did try it on my laptop which is five years old. Unfortunately, the project crashed, there just wasn't enough memory in the laptop to complete. So, I would recommend using an updated Desktop or Laptop with plenty of memory to transfer movie or slideshow projects to Blu-Rays. One more thing, I have not tried playing a blu-ray disc on this via my Desktop, so I cannot comment on this. In the meantime, I can safely recommend this Hardware.Overall, I have found it does work very well indeed (so far) and I am quite pleased with it. I can safely recommend this external Blu-Ray writer.
