Q: Is the on/switch on the handle of the head or on the pump that sits in the water?

The switch is on the separate battery pack, and hangs off the combined hose. It is NOT submersible, but they include hooks to hang it from. I covered mine with a zip lock bag to protect from splashes, and you can push the power button through plastic. So far so good here; shower is good, but it sucks through the water fast, so plan accordingly. You will hear the sound change when the water is gone, turn the battery off immediately to protect the pump.

Q: can I buy extra batteries?

Just saw this. Qbuds has a similar setup and they sell batteries.

Q: What is the diameter of the pump? I need to ensure it fits into the opening of the container.

the head is 1.5 and the yellow part adds .2 so 1.7" total. the hose detaches so if you can get the bucket open you could put the pump inside and run the hose through a smaller opening
