Great! Buy with battery and external gps antenna.
Bluetooth connectivity is great. I've used it with both Garmin Pilot and Foreflight 8, works perfect on either. As advertised!I recommend buying the one with the battery included, which I didn't do and had to add later. Also, pickup the Garmin external GPS antenna so you can place the GDL-39 on the floor of your aircraft. I found that placing it on the dash by the windscreen made it to overheat (from the sunlight and the electronics).

Great unit, disappointing ADS-B functionality.
The GDL-39 3D converts any tablet or smartphone into a powerful flight planner and backup cockpit. It provides attitude, GPS altitude & speed weather and ADS-B weather+traffic. The accompanying Pilot software is very good, complete and easy to use. With an iPad mini this is a 'killer' flight planning and guidance combo. Synthetic Vision is a neat feature, and its nice to have 100% independent backup instruments. The receiver hardware is very well designed. It is placed on top the glare screen of the cockpit. It turns out that the 12V cigarette adapter outlet is disabled in the C172s that I rent. Rather than shelling out the extra $50-100 for a rechargeable battery, I tinkered together a simple holder for 8 D-cells to supply 12V. It works great and gives much longer endurance than the Garmin battery.Though everything works as advertised, the ADS-B traffic info is disappointing as it misses many planes. This is the nature of passive ADB-B, and because most planes are not equipped with ADS-B out. It not a failure of the receiver, but the seriously limited usefulness of this passive ADB-B traffic in practice. This crippling limitation is not exactly advertised by Garmin.I flew a C172/G-1000 to compare old-fashioned TIS (mode-S) traffic vs the (passive) ADS-B in practice. When comparing the TIS traffic with the ADS-B many targets were missing in the latter. Outside of TIS coverage ADS-B did show some useful traffic (as any traffic info is better than none). If the iPad is not mounted within an easy visual scan, it is hard to be alerted by the traffic warnings.

Nice upgrade
Works only with Garmin Pilot application on both iPad and Android devices. This new antenna provides synthetic vision to iPad but not on adroid devices at the moment. SynVis is a fabulous feature that essentially replicates my $20,000 Aspen panel PFD and displays terrain, obstacles and traffic in 3D. Not sure what features are available on iPhone. Android version has improved dramatically over the past year or so. It was pretty buggy at first but now solid. Terrain, obstacles, ADS-B weather is available on all devices and operating systems in plan view. Traffic functionality depends on equipment installed in the aircraft. To receive all traffic, the plane must have ADS-B out. My plane added this feature with the Extended Squitter upgrade to the Garmin 330 Mode S transponder. My advice to those who don't have ADS-B out is to use the free FltPlanGo app which works on iPad and android with 5 different antennas, but not this one, so far. It's a remarkable app with most of the features of Garmin Pilot, including geo ref charts, approach plates, airport diagrams. You would get the free ADS-B weather and limited traffic but no synvis, terrain, or obstacles --- yet. You'd get 90% of the features with no subscription charges at all. It also has a number of features Garmin Pilot does not have, such as calculators for temperature conversion, density altitude, runway winds, weight and balance, and pilot logbook. A really good deal and a very slick app.
