We bought two dozen of these for our office for workstation authentication. They are like big pieces of jewelry with a heavy metallic body, a coated optical surface and a long USB cable that will extend from your PC on the floor to a desk. Really beautiful. And, when they are set up with a driver and biometric software, they work really well.BUT... this is not a consumer product. At all. Software and support are for larger customers with a dedicated IT person or developer. It is not really appropriate for Amazon to sell this device without anything to make it work.If you buy this, you will not be able to just plug it in and have Windows automatically install a driver. Instead, expect to do quite a bit of searching for drivers. The company that "supports" the UareU has many software updates and SDK updates but not the actual drivers or a free download of the SDK. Our software vendor already developed an application so we can log in to their suite using a fingerprint. But developing a login script for our domain involves getting a driver from another vendor and getting Windows to recognize the device first. Then, using a software developer kit we (meaning our IT specialist) are developing a login script. There may be simpler methods; Lenovo uses the UareU for their biometric scanner and you may be able to use their driver and\or application.The bottom line:This is not plug and play. It seems a bit odd for this item to be sold retail without any freely available driiver or software. I have heard from a smaller developer that the UareU was sold retail with software, but the company couldn't or wouldn't handle the volume of support requests. So they just stopped providing software. If you want to use one of these I suggest doing your homework, a lot of it, before you purchase one. I'm giving this device three stars: five for the physical hardware and how well it works when it has software, one star for software availability and support. It is really more appropriate for developers who have been hired to make biometric login possible for specialized applications like retail and medical offices.

Conclusion: Fantastic product, great qualityPros+ Great looks+ Blue light won't bother your eyes+ Long lasting if you don't stratch the clear window where you put your finger+ We had a software designed for its predecessor, the 4000B and we just bought this one and plugged it in and works great without any software, SDK or driver update needed.Cons- Remember you need a special software to use this hardware, because it requires you to install the Digital Persona drivers, and in the fingerprint software to use the special Digital Persona SDK, so make sure your software can use this model.Great buy

As other reviewers have stated it does not come with software and will not work on Windows 10 without drivers. I would provide more detail but my earlier attempt to do so was shot down. If you want the drivers be prepared top do a lot of searching and spend more money.

Updated 21 November 2015 - Windows 10! (May work with 8.1 too)Note: To date I have only gotten this to work with local accounts. Microsoft "Hello" does not appear as a sign-in option for my account settings, and the MS Live account is apparently tied to it. The login screen reports the fingerprints associated with that account as "not verified." A lot of folks on the Internet seem to be having this issue (Hello unavailable), so maybe a solution will appear. My test machine has multiple users and using the reader at login correctly identifies all the accounts, (even recognizes my "live account" fingerprint and highlights that account), but the rest of the login process only executes for the local accounts... This model is by far the best built and looks/feels like it should last "forever." I upgraded to this model when I began planning to upgrade my operating system to Windows 7, as the Microsoft wizard informed me the old 2.0 reader would be incompatible with the new operating system. (Why didn't Microsoft support "their own" product? But I digress...)I initially successfully installed them with Windows XP Professional SP2 (32-bit) and am now running on Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (64-bit) with no issues other than procuring software. The product ships without drivers or application software, both of which are required before it will operate properly. Unlike some other reviewers' experiences, my Windows 7 system did not recognize the reader until I manually installed drivers.Note: If you are upgrading from an older fingerprint reader, be sure to uninstall any older application before installing the new drivers. For example, I had the DigitalPersona Password Manager for my 2.0 reader on the system. This application did not work with the 4500 reader and I ended up having to uninstall the new driver, uninstall the application, and re-install the driver.The driver is available from the DigitalPersona dot com website, albeit indirectly. A search for "u.are.u 4500 drivers" (I used Google) gave me the link. The most recent version is 4.0.0.128, the file name is DP00_02_03.zip published March 10, 2009. Simply unzip and run the executable, then reboot. This driver worked with both my XP and 7 configurations. The operating system recognized that I had the U.are.U 4500 attached, and placed a (at this point non-functioning) "fingerprint log on" icon on my welcome screen.Note: The latest firmware (search for "u.are.u 4500 firmware") is also available on the same website. It is Version 102, the file name is DP00_02_04.zip published July 9, 2009.Version 4.x application software is still required at this point to register your fingerprints and actually use the reader. The Digital Persona company used to offer a "Personal" version for retail consumers, but stopped supporting it on April 26th, 2010. They now focus exclusively on corporate/ enterprise/ OEM markets. They will sell the least expensive version of their "Pro Workgroup" software for about $35 per license at the time I write this. It offers a number of pretty awesome features, I recommend looking at it. They offer a free trial as well. For my limited purposes, it was overkill if a free option was available.Copies of the "Personal" software are still floating around the Internet. Of course it will not be supported by the Digital Persona company. The last version was 4.11, but the application includes an upgrade function that may make it possible to install an earlier 4.x version and then get to 4.11 anyway. There are both 32 and 64 bit versions of the "Personal" software, and they are NOT mutually compatible. There is also a version tailored for HP notebooks that may or may not work on other systems. On the XP system I successfully installed an HP 32-bit 4.01 which upgraded to 4.11. On the 64-bit system I initially tried an HP version that did not work, but after about an hour of searching I found a non-HP 4.11 64-bit install that works fine. Unfortunately I can't post links in this review, but the personal applications are still out there if you don't want the professional version and don't mind that they are no longer supported.April 2013 Update: I have not been able to get these to work with Windows 8 yet. The OS recognizes the hardware, but the "Personal" software does not work. I am waiting for a response from Digital Persona as to whether an affordable commercial application is available.

As a large Retail Stores Group we use these a lot of these in our stores for presence management.This is actually one of the best fingerprint readers I've ever used, it's quite easy to set it up, and we've managed to put it on XP, Vista and Win 7. Never had any problems with it.The only issue with this it's the drivers, after you buy this you need to buy the drivers from the manufacturer. I find this really nonsensical, they should just sell a package or something. We had a rough time getting the drivers the first time we got one of these. Nevertheless, the reader itself it's a good product, if you don't mind buying the drivers then you should get this.
