Quiet, Effective Ice Maker, Easier to Clean
Edit: this broke within 10 months.Previously, I bought ice makers branded as "405," the first of which lasted three years before getting too filthy to use, and the second one lasted only a year an a half before breaking down. From what I can see, almost all ice makers in this class (the 10-30,000 yen range) have the exact same innards, probably made by one company, and then they have different and varying cases added by a variety of companies.I have only had it running for a few days, but here are my initial impressions. This ice maker (COWSAR) has a few big advantages:• A huge advantage is cleaning. The Cowsar, like many other new ice machines, has screws on the top where the clear flip-up cover meets the button-panel back top cover. Unscrewing these allows you to remove the top and clean the ice-making assembly. Without that ability, it's impossible to clean, and that whole area becomes a mass of mold and mildew. I count this as a critical feature.• Another advantage is noise. This one is far quieter than the 405 model I had before, notably so.The disadvantages:• The water and ice tank is too small. It's probably the 1.2-liter size. The 405 model has a 2-liter tank, which means more water to allow for more ice between refills, and more ice stored at one time. The smaller tank is usable, but it really makes the machine much more maintenance-heavy. In fact, I noticed that you get the "tank empty" light even when the tank is almost half full, because that much water is necessary to fill the ice-making trough.• You can only empty the water tank with a plug at the bottom. That might be OK if the ice maker is in the kitchen, but I use it in my home office—which means I'll have to bring up a water container and hold the machine over it. Looks like it'll be a hassle. Is it too much to ask for a draining tube?I am hoping that the little plastic grate over the intake tube at the bottom of the tank is removable. It really serves no purpose (nothing gets in the tank that is so big to be stopped by a grate), and it makes it much harder to clean that area, which often gets dirty.I have to read the manual a bit more to figure out more about the controls—it seems like there is no way to choose the size of the ice, though I don't see that as a great disadvantage.
