Different Era
I ordered this film and then realised the appalling reviews it had got, nevertheless it came I watched, I love my films but this was the strangest film I have seen. It had good action through out, great scenery and some stunning sets, that being said I simply could not keep my attention on it, just seemed all wrong, after an hour I turned it off which is not my way, can't figure out what's missing but It's extremely difficult to watch?? Well I gave it another look without the preconceptions I had from reading the bad reviews which is what spoiled my first attempt to watch it, I expected it to be a load of rubbish. If you view it as a completely different slant and interpretation it's not bad at all, in fact it's something different done very well. Some customers have assumed that Little John is portrayed by a black fellow, there is no Little John in this film, Jamie Fox's part is a Moor commander called Jahya, and there is no Will Scarlet in the vain of Robin's half brother its Will Tillman, this is why films get ambiguous reviews because people watch them then write about what they thought they saw rather than the actual film and its content and own merit. No merry band of men from Sherwood Forrest however the Forrest is mentioned in the last few minute, it's a film to be watched for it's own creative talent.

ROBIN HOOD RIDES AGAIN........
Unsurprisingly the film has come in for much criticism, the fictional legendary character of Robin of Loxley having been given yet another make-over.Think, as the story has hit the silver-screen so frequently down the years with stars such as Errol Flynn, Kevin Costner, Russel Crowe, Sean Connery and Richard Todd taking the lead-role as Robin, with the story being told differently on each occasion, I'm not really sure it matters anymore how the legendary tale is portrayed ?For me, these days it's all about being entertained, even though on this occasion the plot does stretch credibility to the limit, however, with plenty of action along the way the film is watchable. We see Robin (Taron Egerton) returning from the Crusades he'd been forced to take part in, finding that his home had been repossessed, his love Marian (Eve Hewson) having been told Robin had been killed now attached to another Will (Jamie Dorman) and the people of Nottingham being bled into deprivation by the corrupt Sheriff (Ben MendelsohnRobin decides to pretend loyalty to the Sheriff whilst having been joined by a former Saracen enemy John (Jamie Foxx)steal back the monies taken from the poor from the Sheriff and return it to the people.Robin, known initially only as The Hood will now become an outlaw to be hunted down, to help him achieve this the Sheriff enlists Robin's former commander Guy of Gisborne (Paul Anderson) to do this. Will Robin prevail?....defeat the Sheriff and indeed win back Marian along the way?The film does entertain, though the plot and some of the casting is questionable, I'd say, catch it on a Movie-Channel.

Not really Robin Hood
If you approach this movie with an "eh ... whatever!" attitude then it won't be too bad. In fact it's quite enjoyable. If you're hoping for something true to the Robin Hood legend and to the period ... forget it.Bows and arrows suddenly become like automatic weapons. The movie tries to give a whole Jonathan Wick type action feel. With films like this where they modernise nearly everything so much so that there's no medieval feeling or atmosphere whatsoever, you have to ask why they even bothered. To fix this it really only takes two adjustments to make this a fun escapist movie, which might have been what they were going for:(1) Make the story about someone other than Robin Hood. Other than the names of characters and the bit about stealing form the rich and giving to the poor, there's really nothing else resembling the Robin Hood legend. The plot and even the characters don't really match the names except in a superficial sense.(2) Change the setting and time period or go to a fantasy setting. This movie works so much better as say 19th century with revolvers and repeating rifles combined with swords etc. A steampunk approach might not go amiss. In fact, judging from the wardrobe it might have been what the director really wanted.
