Excellent for non-liquids
This thermometer is very large and easy to handle (32 cm / 1' 0-1/2" long) and its large display (both done-ness and actual temperature) is easy to read, making it ideal for oven, BBQ or stove-top use. It works perfectly for measuring the internal temperature of meats, breads and other non-liquid items as they cook. The upper part of the thermometer is obviously not waterproof (which I did not need to be told) but the description does not point out the fact that the probe must not be used to measure the temperature of liquids. It cannot, therefore, be used for the many liquid temperature applications I had planned. This limitation should have been stated clearly in the description.4 stars overall: 5 stars for the specific uses I have stated, 3 stars for "liquid incompatibility" and the five second wait time (for the display to register the temperature) which seems somewhat lengthy, given today's technology - no doubt because if the heft of the probe.

Not Pleased
As pointed out in some of the other reviews, this thermometer has a very large copper tip that makes it difficult to check the doneness of thin cuts of meat. Also, I used the thermometer to check the doneness of some baked chicken breasts. It worked fine, but when eating the chicken at the point where the probe entered the meat, I detected a distinct metallic taste. (This was after washing the tip thoroughly with soap before use.) Although I like the digital temperature readout of this product, as far as I'm concerned, it's DONE. I have since purchased a different thermometer with a stainless-steel tip, and am very happy with it.

AWESOME THERMOMETER
I've had this probe for exactly two years. It just today started having an inaccurate reading, I changed the battery but it still reads way under what the temp actually is, I compared it with another thermometer. So evidently something inside has worn out. Not a bad run for a $20 device. It has been absolutely correct for two full years. I've come back to order a new one, because I love this thing! I use it for only one purpose and that is to watch the temp rise in my electric teapot which is tall; I insert the probe along with the cold water and within a minute or two it's ready. Can't be without this thermometer, looked a long time to find a tall one.

Quick & Accurate
I got this instant-read thermometer primarily to check internal temp of artisinal breads, but it soon replaced my meat thermometer. It is so quick and, in side-by-side test with my trusty old dial thermometer, it was very accurate. My only issue with it is that it sometimes - not always - wants to read the room temperature for an extended time. That means that I have to remove the battery when storing it in order to save battery life. Minor inconvenience, but it would rate five stars otherwise.

Good entry level thermometer
A good thermometer is an essential tool for cooking and baking breads. It is one of those tools you may not know how much you needed until you actually have one. These work well, for the price. They aren't as 'instant' as you would think, but for the average home baker, or cook, an excellent entry level, day to day usage, thermometer. My mom even put this in a sink full of dishwater for some reason, and I took it apart, and dried it out, and it kept working.Recommended.

Huge but seems to work good.
This item seems to work just great, but I didn't expect it to be so HUGE. It's a least a foot long and takes up a lot of space in the drawer... just not quite sure why it needs to be so big... Works totally great though, would have rated it about a 3.5 just based on it's unexpected size (probably my own fault).

YEAH! No More Overdone Cooking
This is a simple, easy to use utensil. It pierces even the most stubborn meats and gives the temperature in a flash. I know about how long my dish would take to get to the point that I want it to but I need confirmation. One caveat: The temperature for roasts seems to take a little longer to reach the desired temperature and it might slightly overcook if not watched closely. So, keep an eye out for that.

Under reads everything...and is slow.
This thermometer is pretty much useless to me. I have cooked turkey that is very well done visually and other thermometers show at 180 and this will start at 160 and slowly crawl up to maybe 170...it takes much more than 5 seconds for it to level out at a temperature. Maybe I am not using it right, but it is always different than the probes I cook in the meat. And always seems to under-read the temperature as well.
