There is one each of the buffing pads in the kit.

Is each pad clearly marked which one to use for each compound? Is it really that important to use the right one? How long do they last?

The color of the pad corresponds with the cap of the 3M compounds. The white pad is used first, the black second, and the blue third. Telling you how long a pad will last is very hard to do.
