You get what you pay for.
After much research and a lot of thought due to the high cost compared to many other blades I decided to go for the Dovo 5/8” olive wood razor. It arrived in a box that makes it clear that the company care about detail. It’s very well presented in the box. So what, a nice box means nothing. Well actually it was a clue as to the care the manufacturers take. The razor is a quality bit of kit. A comfortable handle, which I find really important for wet shaving. The blade is fantastic quality, extremely sharp on arrival but I did give it a quick sharpen before I used it just out of personal preference. It was easy to strop. When I used the razor I found the blade to be the perfect size, not too long and not too short. It is easy to control due to the comfortable handle.I am used to wet shaving but using a cut throat razor was new to me. I did cut myself several times when first using this razor but that was purely down to operator error and not any fault of this wonderful blade. Several shaves later I have become almost proficient with this razor and it’s a joy to use. I tend to use the cut throat when I have plenty of time and want a really close shave but have a safety razor for mornings when I am in a rush to get out. Cut throat razors aren’t a tool to use in a hurry!Only buy a cut throat if you are prepared to learn how to handle it properly and you have time for a proper old fashioned shave. Also research wet shaving, use a hot towel before shaving, a pre shave oil and a good shaving foam. If you have the time to master this art then this is the razor for you. Don’t buy the cheap alternatives, with cut throat razors you really do get what you pay for. This is a quality blade, worth the investment.

learn how to keep it sharp
I’ve had this razor for years now. First day using I was so discouraged because it hurt to shave with. now that I’ve learned to hone the edge it is very easy to shave with. Must sharpen and keep sharp. A leather strop only is not good enough.

My first razor.... I LOVE IT!
When I start something new, I tend to go all in. Foolish decision or not, it's what I do. I get what I want because it's generally cheaper in the long run that way and I usually don't have regrets doing that. My wallet might, but I don't. This is no exception. I have sensitive skin that tends to break out when I use a Gillette style razor. I heard that using a straight razor is much better for your skin. For the first week or two of using this razor, I looked like I had gotten into a fight with a cat. But after learning the subtleties of how to use the straight razor, I would NEVER willingly go back. (The only exception is that TSA gets cranky if you have a straight razor in your carry-on; so for short business trips I use a Gillette style.) .The quality of the steel combined with the beauty of the olivewood scales is superb. And if you're going to store the blade for a while, just put a light coat of olive oil on the scales and you're good to go! :D I am QUITE happy with this razor; and in spite of the cost of getting a straight razor setup, I would still HIGHLY recommend it / this razor to anyone and everyone.

Buyer Beware-Most Reviews Correct This Precision Tool- Blade Not Shave Ready Out Of Box, Etc.....
Unfortunately the internet reviews on this razor were completely true, the blade was not in fact shave ready right out of the box. Furthermore, it was not professionally packaged, wrapped in paper to absorb excess oil nor anti-tampering labels placed on it, and plastic exterior wrapping not fully sealed, unlike ordering a razor of this kind straight from a very reputable manufacturer.Per the book "The Art of Shaving: Shaving Made Easy - What the man who shaves ought to know." Paperback – March 28, 2012 by 20th Century Correspondence School (Author), and available at Amazon.com, the blade on this razor in fact did ring true with the thumbnail test, however the imperfections of the blade to take note of, as per this book were sadly all there- micro gouges in blade, some scratching on blade etc.... and highly doubtful can be easily fixed by anyone whom has not manually sharpened a knife with a wet-stone in an exceedingly long time!I would by no means recommend ordering this razor to anyone and encourage them to read internet reviews as well as Amazon.com reviews of this razor prior to purchase. Sadly, this was this reviewers second attempt to obtain a high quality straight razor, as is recommend by most all, as well as strop, etc... from Amazon.com without success, thus the two stars awarded this review! In the end, sadly, one should do extensive homework prior to purchase of this type razor from any source, and would recommend going direct with manufacturer's of these precision tools themselves.PS: Please note the number 41 as part of makers mark on the blade in images of product provided by this Amazon.com seller! The 41 appears both vertical and horizontal in the seller images. On actual product ordered the 41 is vertical (i.e. turned on its side/vertical vs. straight like normal lettering read right to left on horizontal plane.) Is this correct?????
