It certainly did hold the water as intended. Not sure about the mildew issue. Anything that does not get much sunlight is subject to mildew/mold. Might be worth the try.

Q: Will this wick excess water out of the pot?

I have not had the problem of water going from the pot to the water container even when the water container is dry. I don't think the soil would be wet enough for it to act as a wick.

Q: Will this work for a tree planted outdoors?
