Impressive value for parties
I wanted a bit more muscle to drive the old Wharfedales when the children launch their impromptu karaoke sessions, so I took a punt on the Pyle 800-watt mini amplifier. Never mind the word “mini”, it carries four channels and, on paper, eight hundred watts, more than enough to drown out the Aberdeen drizzle outside. Bluetooth 5.0 finds my phone in seconds and stays locked even when I wander the full ten metres to the kettle. For my ageing kit there is USB, SD, AUX and a pair of RCA sockets, while two microphone inputs with a dab of reverb turn the sitting room into a passable pub on Friday night. The build is neither tank-like nor toy-like. The metal case feels decent, yet the knobs have a slight wobble and the fluorescent blue display could guide a North Sea trawler. Sonically the amp is generous in the low end, so I dug out an external equaliser to stop the floorboards trembling. Push the volume and a tiny cooling fan spins up with a gentle hiss, barely noticeable once the music starts. The volume, connectivity and party-friendly tricks leave most cheap receivers standing. Audiophiles chasing clinical precision will want to spend a fair bit more, but for family sing-alongs and general noise-making this little box more than earns its keep.
