can you put a small paperback book at the bottom?

This was a Christmas gift for nine year old granddaughter so I no longer have the caboodle but the caboodle was really really small and I doubt a paperback book would fit.

Could this be used as a pencil box for primary aged students?

Pencils should fit. I wouldn’t use it as a pencil case to carry to school but home would be fine for storage. I purchased it for hair accessories for granddaughter and feel it is quite small. The measurements inside are 8.82 long x 5.88 deep x 3.66 inches high.
