Would this be able to pump water to a height of 6’? I’m thinking it would make a good manual back up for an electric sump pump.

It can. I used mine to pump water up over 10' high through a hose over 20' long. If you extend much higher it will lose some pumping power but at 6' would pump pretty well.

Is this pump self-priming? I plan to use it as an emergency backup for my sump pump.

Yes, the pump is self priming - at least to a height of 2 to 3 feet. Creates good suction to start flow. Thats why I bought it for emergency backup to boat bilge pump as well.

Will this work as a syphon pump? Will it keep water draining out, once you get it started flowing (provided water inlet is higher than outlet)?

It would depend on several factors including the heigth you must lift water, , as in, if you have to go above the water surface over an edge of the pool. Another factor may be, the length of the intake tube as causing resistance to pumping as you are extending it to a deeper depths. If you have the pump, you could try this. Put a Y spltter on intake hose. Both pump and the Y spltter need to be below the level of the surface of the water. I would place both maybe 2 -3feet below the surface level of the water. One side of the Y goes to the pump. The other side is is a bypass to the pump. Put an in line valve of the side of the bypass tubing. After the water is pumped up and over the edge and flowing as you are manually pumping, open the bypass line. Water should then start flowing in the bypass line and the siphon effect should continue. Remember that the end of the bypass tubing should be below the minimum level of the item you are draining by several feet. I have never tried this with a manual hand bilge pump, so others may have better suggestions.
