The second in a series of books on the Lukumí orishas and their manifestations, commonly known as roads. This publication looks at two of the most important deities of the pantheon, and examines some of the transformations experienced both in their Yoruba homeland and in the Americas.

In short by practicing the art of good writing, he expresses the dignity of his subject
On the Orishas Roads and Pathways: Obatalá, Odúa, Oduduwá by Miguel W. Ramos is is the second in the author's series on individual orisha. Obatala and Odua (Odduwa) lead the hierarchies of demigods in both Yoruba and Lukumi religion. They are essential to understanding the cosmogonies of both religions. Ramos pays attention to unraveling the gender dynamics and controversies that surround both orisha. His thesis that Odua (who as a deity is one and the same as Odduduwa) is a primordial female orisha will probably raise more than a few eyebrows among some traditionalist. He uses solid academic as well experiential rhetoric to argue his point. He is an established academic and religious elder and successfully combines both in creating his book. He writes very well in English so that the content is accessible and elegant. In short by practicing the art of good writing, he expresses the dignity of his subject. Obviously, I'm highly recommending this book. One personal point I really appreciated is that he includes information from Mantanzas-based lineages. Most of the written sources in English reflect Havana-based teachings, and it's good to see the other respected given its significant contribution to Lukumi religion.
