This knife is made in Seki, Japan.

I saw one exactly the same but with 34896-260 stamped on. Also said MC63. What's the difference between that and this one?

The last digit only refers to the type of packaging that the knife was shipped with. The knife itself is exactly the same.

Does it come with any kind of protective case. or, is one available?

This knife does not include a case or sheath, but any blade protector long enough should be sufficient to protect the blade.
