Teaches so much in a fun way
This really is the best word book ever, as the title says. It teaches so many everyday situations to young children. The pictures of the animals are beautifully illustrated . The young boys especially appreciate the fire house and trucks, bulldozers, and tractor pictures. It’s also always fun to find lowly worm throughout the pages.

His books really are the "best books ever!"
I bought this book 40 years ago for my children and they loved it. The illustrations are museum quality and so much fun for children. Now, I bought all 3 large hardcover Richard Scary books for my 2 grandchildren. Sadly, they are with their parents in Japan as my son is in the Airforce. However, I watch the 3-year-old lay on the floor, carefully turning the pages with awe in his eyes. Great teaching books!

Fantastic Vocabulary Builder
This book was my son's favorite book to have read to him before nap time. I say read, but it's more of a picture book that sparks questions and conversations. He especially loved the pictures for Whisper and Shout and would point at them repeatedly so I would whisper the word whisper and shout the word shout. He found that to be hilarious. Two decades have passed and now my niece has given birth to her first child. I recently sent her this same book because I know she and her baby will enjoy it as much as my child and I did.

Best Toddler Book Ever
Can't remember how many times I've bought this book to give as a baby gift. My own children wore out one copy from the 1980s and I was just asked to replace the copy I gave to my grandchildren 10 years ago as it was loved to pieces. The book is a wonderful way for babies and toddlers to learn new words. The illustrations are colorful with lots of white space. Each page presents a topic that features in children's daily lives e.g. getting dressed, going to the supermarket, on the playground, the seasons, going to the doctor, counting, etc. My husband used to beg me to hide the book as he had to read it every night! So happy it's still available.

A classic that every household with young children should own
As someone who has entered his second half-century of life, I can remember as a youngster the impact of Richard Scarry books. Even when I had outgrown the simple language in his books and was reading more sophisticated fare, the whimsical pictures and busy events depicted in the books were still a source of joy.Which is why it's surprising that a lot of parents today have not heard of Scarry. That's a shame, because his books have a wonderfully engrossing quality that draws in children like few other books on the market today. Scarry's anthropomorphic animal kingdom is filled with crazy happenings and near disasters as its characters navigate their world. The illustrations contain an attention to detail that undoubtedly served as an inspiration for the "Where's Waldo" books, as little events occur in hidden places and drive curiosity and exploration of the pictures and text. This "Best Word Book Ever" is a large format book that helps beginning readers attach words to images. In this, it's exemplary, and will keep youngsters reading for hours. The simple item labels occur within a context that helps children understand how words and what they describe fit together. It's simple, yet brilliant, stuff. The best recommendation I can give: This book belongs in every household with young children. It's so good, it may be one of those that gets handed down from one generation to next. I know, because that's what I did, passing down this book that I loved as a child to my own son. And I just gave a copy to my young nephew this past Christmas.Truly essential.

Bilingual education
My now middle-aged children loved this book. I gave a copy to a Vietnamese acquaintance who used it to teach his daughter both oral English and oral Vietnamese. She couldn't read yet and didn't know the difference.
