Has anybody used the back of this stone to begin the sharpening process on super dull knives or do repairs? I'd rather not buy a new stone.

This stone is not for sharpening, I can see you may be able to use it but your will ruin the stone, for that better get a brick (or the bottom of a coffee mug).
