compatibility with ClearOS?

I have had ClearOS, Untangled, and pfSense on this box and they all ran fine. Its a nice unit.

Can i install another O.S. on it, like a common linux?

Absolutely. This device is compatible with a number of various firewall distributions as well as Linux Variants like Ubuntu. We haven't qualified performance for these different OS's, but we know they will work!

Can I use open VPN client and server at the same time? I have need to connect into this box on demand while maintaining an openvpn connection

The hardware is capable of such a configuration, and depending on your operating system, this can also be done. I know pfSense supports it.

to confirm this is msata only for OS/storage?

The only available storage / OS option is currently mSATA, unless you are willing to use a different case, as there is a SATA port on the underside of the motherboard that can be used as well.
