What size bit is needed for this drill?

I believe it will accept any drill bit up to a half inch in diameter.

How is this packaged? my order/replacement looks "used": taped on the outside, and no protection inside. just the bare tool rubbing itself on the box.

Yes it has extra tape on the outside to prevent it from opening. Mine shipped in the bare makita box. The tool was in the boxes with spacers/holders. I think it was also in a plastic bag but not completely sure. Check the battery terminals for markings like grease and contact points to tell if a battery was ever inserted.
