Rule 35A Marine Rule-A-Matic Switch - 12V Automatic Bilge Pump Switch - Mercury Free, Durable, Reliable, and Easy to Install

Works great. Make sure you don't reverse the wires. They are the same color. But can only be hooked up one way. Instructions don't specify which wire is which. Test before committing to install. Connect one grey wire to the battery. Then use a voltmeter to verify 12v power comes through. If no 12v, it's backwards. Reverse the grey wires. Test again. One grey wire goes to the battery, one goes to the pump. Brown wire is positive on the pump in my case. Black wire on the pump is ground.

Excellent switch. Quickly installed it, away I went.

These are much nicer to install compared to the older switches -kind big for smaller boats-the removable base make rigging simple -have had better luck with these compared to the super switches rule sells-

So my current switch died....so I thought.....buy something cheap? A "non-brand name" switch? Or the "standard" for what I always thought was the rule (Ha...get it...) for bilge pumps and bilge pump switches.....RULE!Well is showed up and quality looked fair to good! It looked like it may have been slapped together quickly but build quality was good...and clearly stamped on the switch was "Made In China"! Well....as much as I wish it was made in the US/North America....I know that quality depends on the company standards, and I HOPE Rule holds the high standards that made them famous hold true for this switch!I do have to admit, I took some 3M 4000 and did cover lightly the seam on the float! Maybe it will help last longer? I have seen a few reviews that state "FAILED AFTER X TIME" but what failed? The float? The switch it's attached to? I would like to know....but for now...I am giving it 4 stars! Its only been in for 2 weeks....so if it fails quickly....I will revise my review....and try the "cheap one"!

This device is top of the line, at least that is my experience.Though recently I had some problems when at the same time a 2000 GPH pump failed within two months of use even though it has a four years warranty. Amazon Rep told me that I would need to contact the manufacturer because my time warranty through Amazon would be only 30 days and from then on...I would need to contact the manufacturer. ( somewhere in China ) I understand Amazon policy, but honestly I expected more from this Co. And then it occurred that a cheap float switch failed 48 hours after installation. But it happens that the cost of installation is at least three times the cost of the device. So, I decided to go for RULE....to be on the safe side. This is my recommendation. to whoever needsto replace a damaged float switch that are always located as deep and unaccesible as the boat builder could install them....

My 1998 16’ Lund is a real leaker. After about 4 hours the water would start coming up to the floor. This required me to remember to turn on the bilge pump every so often. If I got preoccupied sometimes I’d forget creating extra weight in the boat. I was usually reminded when the bow trolling motor would surface and make a bunch of noise.Installing this switch has taken that out of the equation. It kicks on every half hour or so now. I bypassed the switch it was hooked to and tied it into the power going directly to my battery with a fused line. I know my Lund has a double hull but I really didn’t want to drill into it. I had a 1” thick piece of HDPE polyeurethane that I cut a block out of and screwed it to that, then glued it to the floor. Gorilla glue or a construction adhesive will work, I used a silicone based adhesive I had laying around. This also elevated it up just a bit from the pump so it will for sure shut off. If the float can’t drop down low enough it won’t shut off. If the float is at the same level as the highest point of the intake on your pump, this may happen.Now I don’t leave a trail of water to my house when I trailer my boat home from the river. The big advantage is I can leave it on a dock at a resort or cabin overnight or longer without worrying about finding it on the bottom in the morning. It also gets rid of rainwater as needed.
