Is your child able to produce low d e and f notes easily, using normal finger pressure on the pads?

Yes very easily and hitting low C is easy too. I play the instrument myself and use it as my backup. If your child is having problems with those notes it sounds like you have a leak. Only very light pressure should be needed well within the capability of a small child. As I am sure you know leaks are common and normally easy and cheap to fix. I wouldn't try to fix it yourself (although it's easy to do) as there may be other issues with the setup that a flute repairer can sort out. This model should be easy to play and very free blowing ...the perfect beginners instrument
