does this screw into the ceiling or can I attach in another way?

No it doesn't screw in to the ceiling but the top part is twisted a little to fit your ceiling tightly as it's extendable.. It will be stable. I have 2 cats jumping on it at once and it's never fallen down. been a great buy

Would this be suitable for a ragdoll cat?

Hello. I think the shelves would be small for a Ragdoll. Also, I will warn you that the fur covering the pole came away quickly (cats' claws are savage). I bought a long length of hessian to wrap around the pole sections which cured the problem that a better design would have prevented. I don't think it's worth the money. If you can afford it I'd look at cat trees at Cat Tree Specialist. Their trees shelves, hammocks and beds are better made and plenty big enough for Maine Coons.

What is the diameter of the center pole?

I’m not sure. I had to send it back due to the poles being damaged
