Fathers: You Will Look and Sound Ridiculous Trying to Crack This One
Got one for my daughter a few years ago. She was just learning to write, and loves to draw. With two other younger sisters sharing a room, she loved the idea of having something 'secret' she could keep. The voice password works surprisingly well: I tried opening it, even saying the right word in the wrong voice will not open it! I then tried to imitate her 8-YO girl voice to the best of my ability for several minutes, only to have my wife yell at me to STOP IT because it was so ridiculous and weirdly annoying to her who was sitting nearby, on the phone. The kids had a good laugh. The secret light thingy works well too, but she doesn't seem to use it as much. All was well until she had a friend come over, and play with it without permission. After the friend was done, she tossed it on the bed, fell off the bed, and broke it. We had to buy another one. Dangit

Truly secure and recognizes users voice
My daughter asked Santa for the Password Journal for Christmas. I bought it without reading the reviews and assumed it wouldn't be quite as secure as she described. Lo and behold -- it's amazingly secure. My daughter set a password on Christmas morning (Santa Claus). Seven other people heard her set the password and we all tried to "break in" to her diary, but were kept locked out. It truly recognizes the rightful owners voice and keeps the secrets safe inside. She also loves the invisible ink pen that comes with it along with the special light that makes the ink visible. She was so happy to receive this and has already left lots of secrets inside. I only wish they had diary's this secure back in the day when my big brother so easily picked the little locks on "old fashioned" diaries.

Great idea, but complex item.
The whole "voice-activated" is the reason my friend's daughter wanted it. Unfortunately, it's hearing device is VERY SENSITIVE. I spent an hour with the child trying to explain that you can't change your pitch of voice when saying the password, AT ALL. How ever / whatever tone you say the word is EXACTLY how you must repeat it. Even I had difficulty with repeating the same word the exact same way every time. After about 20 minutes of being locked out of it, I finally found the reset button. All of these hints and redos are listed in the directions, but the manual is not user-friendly for children between seven and eleven. She had a hard time understanding what all button options do and how to work it.On the positive side, she LOVES the pen light and secretive writing capabilities. She enjoys the spacious storage and the overall size of the item. She really does love her new diary, but in all honesty though, she's mostly given up on the voice-lock.

Perfect For A First Journal!
This was a gift for my daughter's 7th birthday. It is a cute little journal and she gets a kick out of the invisible ink and blacklight. The only downside is that you really have to say the password EXACTLY as you program it--any background noise or different inflections and you are immediately labeled an intruder by the journal's security system :) I suggest encouraging your child to choose a simple one word password--not a phrase- and record it in a very quiet room. The batteries have not been replaced a year later after pretty regular use, although we have replaced the notebook 3 or 4 times. A small dollar store notepad fits just fine. It holds little treasures in a small compartment and is the perfect starter journal!

Daughter Loves It
My 9 year old daughter saw one of these at Wally and had to have one. I suggested she include it in her letter to Santa (ya, she still believes and will continue to let her until one of her classmates clues her in). So, Santa brought her this one. Very good price in comparison to other vendors (I have to admit I had what Amazon has done to many of our mom and pops but damn, in this economy it is hard not to purchase from Amazon with their almost always lower price, free shipping, no tax, etc.).It works very well. She recorded her "password" on high quality and even she has to say it back exactly or it won't let her in. I have tried it and it won't let me in either. There is a reset so I as a parent (or anyone else) could reset it but then she would know and why? She is very honest and why shouldn't she have her "private" journal. As a divorced dad, I think she should have her own place to record her thoughts and secrets.

This was suppose to be a Christmas gift and I would like to know why it can't be exchanged
I bought this item for my granddaughter for Christmas. She was so excited when she saw the box because this was really one of the gifts she had requested. We tried to opened it on today but never could get it to unlock. I just checked to see it it could be exchanged and unfortunately not. This was suppose to be a Christmas gift and I would like to know why it can't be exchanged. Actually I've purchased something that doesn't work know fault of ours. I should be able to exchange it or get my money back. Please advise.

Overall satisfied with this item
This was the main gift my daughter asked for from Santa for Christmas. She is almost 5 (so below the recommended age for this product), but it's what she wanted. I'm glad I bought it because she LOVES it. She recorded her own password, greetings and alert. We had to set the security to low and even then experienced some issues with the journal not recognizing her voice/password. But we changed her password and haven't had any more issues. The notebook and hidden compartment are really small, especially considering the item itself isn't small, so you'd think they could have fit a larger notebook. It's more than enough for a small child, but I imagine an older child (10+) would lose interest quickly. My daughter is in pre-school and can only spell a few words, so she mostly draws pictures. She utilizes the black light 99% of the time and for the price I'd say the light works great. Overall this was a great purchase.
