Why is this $60? It's a piece of plastic.

Piece of plastic or not, there are alot of costs involved and I can certainly understand that. That piece of plastic overrides the pieces of cardboard disposable overpriced Scoop Away cartridges price for a pack of 3 gets higher and higher every month which is tough on retired individuals like myself. I ordered this piece of plastic, it beats the overpriced cardboard cartridges. Oh and am getting it on sale for $55, not $60 as you stated.

Is there any difference between this litter tray and the LitterWorks® Permanent Scoopfree® Compatible Litter Tray. The other ne is $20 cheaper

This is the original permanent tray for the ScoopFree, going back years—long before ScoopFree offered their own and tried to force you into a subscription service. I have one from when the owner was manufacturing them in his garage. He has provided incredible customer support over the years, and the tray outlasted the ScoopFree itself.

OK, this may be a stupid question, but how does one exactly use this thing? It sure appears that it's a chore to clean out the waste.

First, referring to the the Forever Litter Tray website will give you all the answers you need, including cleaning by occasionally soaking in white vinegar and water to remove any surface stains. Beyond that, users don’t “stir” the crystals daily which allows the crystals to release the absorbed water and lessening the pooling of liquid due to proper aeration. The more you take that extra 30 seconds a day to promote aeration, the longer the crystals last, saving even more money. With my 2 15lb boys and this simple daily routine, I can stretch the crystal to 3 weeks without issues. Scoop & Stir daily and you will be amazed how much better the entire ScoopFree/FLT setup works.

Do you have to use the trays and crystals? I have flushing litter.

No, you don't need the supplied crystal litter. We've been using Dr. Elsey's senior crystals for years now. Just the plastic tray is fine (don't need the cardboard if you have this).
