Installed in detached workshop with a right hand reverse entry side-door. FS-8400 Door Closer and associated parts seem heavy duty, but not sure if the hold open feature (adjust the 1 1/2" nut) will live up to my expectations over time. Overall rating would have been 5 stars, but the provided installation instructions definitely have room for improvement...better step-by-step instructions and online video(s) would be helpful!

This appears to be a heavy weight and well constructed door closer but it ultimately proved to be poorly manufactured and ultimately unusable. I can not recommend it. This is probably the 5th door closer I purchased and installed over the years so I am not a novice. Once I did the initial set up, I noticed that the hold open feature that stated it would work at 100 degrees, was actually much short of that. The door would stay open only at about 70 degrees rather than 90 that I needed. The instructions stated that I should adjust the friction device but it did not identify it on the diagram. After about an hour on the internet (which included a 56 second sales video from the manufacturer with no instructions), I located a video from a different but similar manufacturer and was able to identify the hold open adjustment. Unfortunately, the adjustment on my unit was 100% frozen and would not budge. After about 4 lost hours I decided to give up and find another brand of acceptable quality. I recommend you pass on this brand.

Door closer seems like it is of good quality. The instructions however are terrible, and I have to deduct a star for that, because it is inexcusable how awful they are. They could easily include a 5 page installation manual with pictures so that you know exactly what it is you are doing, instead, they put everyone on one piece of paper, and list the instructions. It was completely unclear to me how to adjust the hold open function, and had to waste time doing research elsewhere.Now that I've installed it, I realize it was actually a very easy install, but with better instructions and pictures, I'd have had it done in 1/3rd of the time. And I resent that.

This door closer works perfectly for me. Lots of different installation options and lots of configurations. The hardest part of the installation was deciding which way I wanted to install this (top jamb right hand door). Once that was done the only small issue I had was that there was trim around the door frame, where the closer body was to go, and that trim was not flat. After resolving the trim issue, the installation, using the template, was quick and easy. Adjustment was just as easy and allows adjusting the force it takes to open the door (spring) and the two closing speeds (sweep and latch). Door is closing just as I want it now. No more wind blowing it open because it wasn't closed completely and no more slamming.

We keep coming back to this product because of the exceptional quality of the various units that they have available and that they have exactly what we need for the newest install. Due to the details provided, we will be able to be proactive with this install and it should go well.
