This 4CD box set chronicles the early years of Archie Shepp's musical career, as an originator and a pioneer of the early 1960s free-form movement. Featuring eight original albums, together totalling over 5 hours playing time, this set serves as an ideal introduction to this oft-under-appreciated musical genius, and as a welcome reminder of the great man's inspired vision and extraordinary sound.

FREE JAZZ ROYALTY
Excellent collection of the very underrated Shepp. Some music not otherwise available. Too much great music to go into detail; suffice it to say, this is some of the best free jazz from the sixties around.

NOT the complete New York Contemporary Five
I have only spent a couple of hours with this set and discovered recordings from "Jazzhus Montmartre" are not "complete" - the first track from volume 1 (Cism) has been truncated by a couple of minutes and the final track from volume 2 (Trio - over 15 minutes) is missing. There might be more errors, but that is what I notice today.

Complete enough, for the money
I bought this set several weeks ago, but just now getting to checking it out and enjoying the music. I note the reviewer who complains about lack of completeness in some of the albums included. I also note the reviewer, audaciously self-named Runmentionable, who points out that with the amount of music to squeeze onto 4 CDs, compromises of some sort are inevitable. I know Archie Shepp from first seeing him with Coltrane, I am listening to the incomplete (but what is there is outstanding!) "Four for Trane", and I am about to shut up and head off to shop for the complete edition, as Runmentionable accurately states I will want to do.
