Eye Opening Memoir

It illustrates the hardships she faced both in the unforgivable environment, and with the people themselves. It was heartwarming and heartbreaking. Mostly, it was eye-opening and instructive. Anne was threatened, mistreated, and scorned for doing what was right, for allowing Indian school children into her school house, and for falling in love with a half white/half Inuit man, yet, she prevailed and continued fighting.I loved this book; it was my second time reading it. I read it back in high school, and it was impactful then, but it was more impactful now. Anne is nineteen when she leaves the states in search of adventure. Sheโs called to teach in the Alaskan wilderness, during a time of monumental change in Alaska. Itโs very much Americaโs final frontier, and thereโs a huge gold rush boom. What Anne discovers is the brutal life led by both the immigrants and natives, and the deep prejudices harbored.I loved Anneโs pure heart. She doesnโt care about a childโs skin color; everyone has a right to an education. She opens her schoolroom for native Inuit children and sheโs punished for it. The people of Chicken donโt agree with her, and they donโt want their white children in the same room as โsavages.โ Seeing how deep these prejudices were, was often very hard to read. The Alaskan wilderness is unforgivable, and losing the support of her small town became a life or death situation, in a place where temperatures drop to 50 below. Yet, Anne never compromises on what is right. Robert SpechtThere was a heavy sense of helplessness throughout the story. Anne is a petite, nineteen year old woman facing off against some really mean people who could seriously harm her. Sheโs mistreated for doing whatโs right. And when she begins to fall in love with a half white/half inuit man, sheโs threatened, even shunned. This was often difficult to read. But, there are some extremely heart warming events in this book, too. Especially between Anne and her school children. Those moments made the book easier to stomach. It claims to be a โlove storyโ and while there is a love story present, itโs not the center of Anneโs story. Thereโs so much more to it than that. This book gives a real look at the harsh aspects of frontier life. The way people โsurvivedโ and how hard they had to be. It also illustrated the consequences of the white man on the Indian people, and how destructive the white man was to their culture:โ๐๐ก๐๐ญ ๐๐ง๐๐ข๐๐ง ๐ฐ๐๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฎ๐๐ค. โ โRobert SpechtI donโt normally go for memoirs/biographies. This is written really well, reads like a genuine novel, and transports you to a different time, a different world, a different way of life. Highly recommend for people of all ages, even if you donโt normally enjoy biographies (I sure donโt, normally!)

It was exactly as described
There was nothing to dislike...I bought this book secondhand as we had lived in Alaska plus the comments were all excellent. It takes someone who has really lived to tell a story repeated to someone else, that someone else is Robert Specht the author, a superb story teller who can and does relate to his subject and her life in Alaska Nineteen-year-old teacher, Ann Hobbs, the protagonist. Hang on as Specht sails into our lives with her story.I can't recall ever in my 80+ years, of reading a book with such a temporal subject and adventure having such an effect on me. Our daughter who is wife, mother, teacher and successful actress felt the same as I and other commenters do.Find a copy of Tisha by Robert Specht to read, youโll be glad you did.JM Stephens

Adaptation and Challenges, Acceptance and Change in an Alaskan Community
This is a brilliant book written about a young teacher who travels to the Alaskan wilderness to teach in a small village called Chicken. It is a true story, set in the 1920's and then passed on verbally in the 1970s. It is very well written and shows what life is like for the Alaskans, and what it was like between winter and summer before they had built roads to all the small settlements. I was astounded by the significance of winter in terms of movement via sled in preference to horses in summer but also by the ways in which the young teacher was taught to survive in this beautiful but very hostile environment. She "adopts" a couple of mixed race Indian children and gains the wrath of the whole community by her efforts to accept the First Alaskans as equally capable of learning and in need of The Three R's. Chicken is now linked to Fairbanks and Anchorage by a road so it would be dramatically changed. For this reason alone it is worth reading this book for the knowledge of how the people coped with such an extreme environment but also at the changes in race relations since the 1920s. Highly recommended - a very interesting read.

Heartwarming
Having just visited Alaska, the descriptions in this book seemed even more real. For a young woman to have such courage is truly inspiring.

Tisha: The Story of a Young Teacher in the Alaska Wilderness
This book kept my attention and gave me as much to look forward to on my short daily readings as The Hunger Games did. There were real life lessons, danger, and pathos surrounding the treatment of the people native to Alaska. I found myself becoming part of the beauty and the hardships of this unforgiving land and the people who had the grit to live there. Anne was a great heroine with strength, charm and humanity; and the hero was stalwart, strong and brave.

beautiful story.
I really enjoyed this story. What a really honest look at the times, Alaska and the native Indians. The bigotry and hatred and the love. I just really enjoyed it.
