My son opened the lid right when they arrived cause he was afraid they couldn't breathe. I covered them up right away. Will they be ok?

Yes. Holes in lid, fabric is breathable. Caterpillars use the fabric to hang from when they cocoon, so keep lid on. Don’t need to do anything till they’re all hanging, then place lids standing upright in the holder provided

Is it normal for there to be webs in the cup?

It is a normal part of caterpillar life to form webs. The webs seem to help them when they eventually climb to the top of their cup to hang upside down. I have had webs every time with these and have ordered them almost every year for the last 15 years.
