Q: You can use a cell phone ap to program it yourself, is that correct?

NO, They are pre programed. Just charge them and they are ready to go. You can change the program in your ear simply by cuping your hand over each ear and tapping thus changing the program volume from 1 to 4 depending upon your individual needs. A voice in the eargo will speak to you so you know the program you have selected. Good Hearing.

Q: how do you control the volume

Program 1 to 4 are actually in an increasing volume order. You also can decrease high/low frequencies at any program using the app. See my review.

Q: I received free non working smple. Was told by rep that right and left ears are identical. Aren't they shaped differently to fit properly?

Eargo devices are 'open-fit' and are not molded to the ear canal. Eargo's patented Flexis are designed to suspend the hearing aid in the ear and allow air to pass into the canal (vs. blocking the ear). These are the replaceable 'tips' on the device and are made of medical-grade silicone. Every Eargo system comes with an assortment of Flexis for you to choose from. Eargo Neo HiFi comes with our newest iteration, Flexi TetraPalms. There are two sizes provided, 'Regular' which is suitable for most users, and 'Large', which are suitable for larger than average ear canals. Most users use the same size in each ear but some prefer to use a 'Regular' size in one ear, and a 'Large' in the other.

Q: Is it normal for all the led's on the case to stay on all the time? i have all blue on the bottom and all white on top.

No; generally when you take off or replace the cap the dots light up white. If the bottom dots are blue, it sounds like it's trying to update. Otherwise something is connecting to your case by bluetooth. Have you tried opening the app on your phone and connecting and seeing if it needs to update? Once it does that it should go back to the white dots that temporarily light up when the cover is removed/replaced.
