Just a little over an inch. Probably 1 1/4".

Would it hurt anything to leave the blue protective plastic over the stainless steel for an outdoor installation?

I suppose you can, but not sure why you would leave on blue plastic. Mine is in garage, gets driven over, salt in winter and no rust or problem. Had it for about 4 years

how long are the prongs?

There are eight prongs, bendable, all 1.25 inches long. It works great for my floor drain in a tiled basement
